$a Historically, the oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) had existed in the wild in West Africa long before the introduction of any systematic cultivation.  However, the distribution of palm oil across the African continent and Europe for hundreds and maybe thousands of years before the 19th century has been attributed to human consumption and migration.  The earliest archaeological evidence discovered in a 5,000 year-old eartern jar containing oily residues in a tomb near the Pyramids at Abydos, Egypt, suggested that palm oil had been traded and used as food and medicine for a very long time.
